Yesterday was a "French-filled" day. J and I watched French films all day (three, to be exact) at the French Film Festival at Shangri La. Then ate French Fries from McDo. Haha. I should've eaten French toast, too.
We watched these:
Dix-Sept Fois Cecile Cassard
400 coups
La Pianiste
Being influenced by conservative Catholic culture (oh super yeah, Catholic school all the way, and what family I belong to), I sort of "got sick" watching some of the scenes. I was just not prepared to see such things (yet?). But as my friend V mentioned, what liberation it brought.
We can't all just hide in our own "sheltered" worlds all the time. The movie is not pornography. It's a really decent film. It's all about perspective. All three films were great. I could say that La Pianiste is my favorite. I like the plot very much. The story is very real. It presents how sick everyone of us are. How we are all strangled by the society we live in. How society makes us sick. We have our own secret desires that the world looks down upon. We can't break free as culture says it's wrong. But should those reasons, being wrong in the eyes of society, keep us from being happy? Keep us from living our life?
Society drives us mad. Pushes us to the limits. It makes us want to turn the other way. Turn away. But we simply cannot. Though the fighter in us rebels--we hide our desires, we do them secretly. In turn our desires burn us down. Like a mad, struggling dog trying to break free from her chains, she is violently strangled.
Sigh.
