Just this morning, while we were at the gasoline station, there was a taong grasa taking a "bath" using the station's water supply. Matthew was staring at the man intently, so I asked him what he was thinking.
"Matt, what's the man doing?"
"The mama (man) is taking a bath outside, because he has no house."
He paused and then added,
"Like the other bata, none house, only sleeping on the floor, wawa."
I was amazed at what he said. I didn't know that at his age, he was already observant of his surroundings. At his age, he knew that these people had no houses to sleep in, or even to take a bath in.
Sometimes we just pass these people by. We often just ignore them, sometimes even telling them to get out of our way. But really, if we tell them to get out of our way, where will they go? As Matt said, they had no houses. They slept on the floor. On the cold streets.
I often wonder, how could they survive? They sleep on the streets, with just a piece of carton to warm their backs. As much as I want to help them, I feel that I couldn't help them enough. The feeling of helplessness surfaces. When I see these people, I badly want to reach inside their hearts, but it's not an easy thing to do.
Hay, naguluhan ako.
