For more information about the Sumilao Farmers and their March
and how you can help,
please visit our website at
http://sumilaomarch .multiply. com

Help us raise awareness, public opinion, and funds for the Sumilao farmers of Bukidnon. Fifty or more than one hundred fifty claimant-farmers will walk on foot from Bukidnon to Manila (1500 kms) on October 9 until December 10 (Human Rights Day).

This act of self-suffering, is their non-violent way to voice out and demand their rights over their lands and to help the public understand the importance of agrarian reform.

They staged a 28-day hunger strike in 1997 in protest over the conversion of 144 hectares earlier awarded to them by government. They won broad public support and were granted by President Ramos 100 out of 144 hectare. But the Supreme Court gave the 100 hectares back to the landowner on the basis of technicality. Violating land conversion laws, the landowner did not develop the property according to the government-approved plan within the prescribed five years and sold it to a corporation led by one of the richest men in this country.

The farmers have all the legal and moral right to reclaim their land, but they are against all odds. It is time to give the farmers what is duly theirs! They deserve NO LESS.

Help and Join Us in this cause! Take part in this movement!

1. Help generate signatures
to our online petition http://www.ipetitio ns.com/petition/ sumilaofarmers/ index.html

2. Help us raise funds.
Any amount will be of great help! Donations will go to the following needs during the 60-day walk: food, water, slippers, raincoats, tents, first aid kits, medicines, leaflets, banners, and other public information materials.

3. Spread the word!
Together, let us champion justice and truth!

sana

Monday, November 12, 2007
Leche sila. Atupagin nila ang sarili nilang buhay.

Puro naman sana eh. Puro nalang sana. Pero wala nang mangyayari.
Ihiwalay mo na ang sarili mo.

Project 50/50: A Pledge Campaign to Support the Sumilao Farmers

The Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral Committee on Social Concerns and Involvement together with the Committee on External Affiliations bring you:

PROJECT 50/50:
A pledge campaign to raise P50,000 for the 50 marching Sumilao farmers

From October 9 to December 10, 50 of the 150 claimant-farmers of Higaonon Ancestry will be marching from Bukidnon to Manila to voice out and demand their rights over their ancestral lands and also bring to national attention the importance of agrarian reform.

As men-and-women for others, we are called to hear the plight of our less fortunate brothers and sisters and act to make a difference in our society. This crusade of the Sumilao farmers for a better agrarian reform program is a very good opportunity for us to make that difference.

Mechanics of the pledge campaign:
1. Individuals or blocks can donate money in these denominations:
1 x P 5000
2 x P 2500
3 x P 1000
4 x P 500
100 x P 100
300 x P 50
500 x P 20
for a total of P 50000

2. Donations can be given to your block or course representatives who will forward this to members of the Committee on Social Concerns and Involvement.

3. You or your group will be given an official receipt for auditing purposes.

4. Your name will also be written on the gigantic tarp to be hanged along SEC walk to track the progress of the pledge campaign.

5. This pledge campaign will start on Nov 12 and will end on Nov 30.

The proceeds from this pledge campaign shall be used to support the marchers as they journey to Malacañang.

Also, watch out for the donation cans to be placed in strategic areas on campus and to be carried by all your Sanggunian officers.

Track the progress of the march and know other information about this campaign and the agrarian reform program at the Sanggunian board along EDSA Walk to be set up together with the DS students supporting this march.

Finally, watch out for the Forum on Agrarian Reform where experts will provide the current facts and problems faced by the agricultural sector in terms of land distribution reform. More details on this event will be released soon.

For more details regarding this campaign, check out www.sumilaomarch.multiply.com or ask your Sanggunian officers when the second semester starts.

Ateneans, it is our time to be heroes. Let us support the
Sumilao farmers and their campaign for social justice.

Walk for Sumilao, Walk for Justice

5 November 2007

The Struggle Continues

On 3 November 2007, the Sumilao Farmers were warmly welcomed and accommodated by the sisters at St. Mary's College of Catbalogan (SMCC). After 26 days of walking, this was the first time that they were able to rest their tired bodies in very comfortable beddings. They spent the night in air-conditioned rooms with complete sleeping accessories. Indeed, sleeping and resting on a soft and comfortable bed is but more than a consolation after their whole, long and tiring day. For their 26 th day of walk, they struggled to reach the day's point of destination in Catbalogan with a distance of 47 kilometers.

Speaking of long and tiring walk, the Sumilao Farmers started their journey for the day at around 5:00 a.m. They left the Municipality of Caldiga few minutes before sunrise. The weather did not cooperate with the marchers – at first it was hot and humid, then the rain fell, and after less than an hour, it returned to hot and humid again, after which it rained rain again, and so forth and so on. The roads were also bad. The marchers had to walk in muddy and deformed roads and streets from Caldiga to Catbalogan.

Yesterday, four of the marchers fainted. Fortunately, aside from the medical team of the marchers themselves, Kabalikat Rescue Team of Catbalogan responded immediately and gave the 4 marchers first aid treatment. Then they brought the marchers in Sacred Heart Hospital for further treatment where the doctor advised them to rest.

A remarkable moment for the day was the conversation between one by-stander and one of the farmers/marchers. Said by-stander asked Danny, one of the marchers, why they have to carry the persons who fainted when there is a back-up vehicle where said persons may take a rest. Danny responded that the campaign/struggle is 'walk for Sumilao and walk for justice';  that this is part of their sacrifice for the wrongdoings of the government, although they believe that they don't deserve to undergo such suffering just to awaken the government to perform its duty.   They have to do something for the government to realize that they committed something that gravely infringed their basic human right.

The following day, 4 November 2007, the marchers started to head off to San Jorge from Catbalogan with 36 kilometers. The day's journey for the farmers was not that difficult, considering that the roads were just fine and the weather was friendly to them.

In the morning, most of the farmers suffered LBM. It happened an hour after their breakfast. They thought that it was all because of the water they drank. With this situation, they have to stop for a moment, attend to the call of nature and take some medicines in order to prevent further hassles.

While negotiating the roads from Catbalogan to San Jorge, they felt that by-standers and motorists were very eager to know their plight and the reason behind their 1500-kilometer walk from Bukidnon to Manila.   The people were asking to have a copy of their leaf lets and other campaign paraphernalias. The people must have wondered whether the present administration would take a few minutes to read those leaflets the farmers are distributing.

They stayed and rested in San Jorge's Parish Church.

Revisiting the Sumilao Land:

Sumilao Farmers as Qualified CARP Beneficiaries

Republic Act 6657, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law (CARL), is but a social legislation enacted primarily to respect, protect, promote, and fulfill the basic human rights of the farmers. Two of the salient features of the law are its definition to Agrarian Reform and the enumerated qualifications before a farmer could benefit under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

The law comprehensively defined and discussed agrarian reform in the Philippine context and not of another.   Agrarian reform, accordingly to the law, is the redistribution of lands, regardless of crops or fruits produced, to farmers and regular farmworkers who are landless, irrespective of tenurial arrangement, it includes the totality of factors and support services designed to lift the economic status of the beneficiaries and all other arrangements alternative the physical redistribution of lands, such as production or profit sharing, labor administration, and distribution of shares of stock, which will allow beneficiaries to receive a just share of the fruits of the land they work.

The law further says that the land to be distributed should be agricultural land, and the same shall be distributed as much as possible to landless residents of the same barangay, or in the absence thereof, landless residents of the same municipality in the following order of priority: a) agricultural lessess and share tenants; b) regular farmworkers; c) seasonal farmworkers; d) other farmworkers; e) actual tillers of occupants of public lands; e) collectives of cooperatives of the above beneficiaries; and g) other directly working on the land.

Based on the foregoing, the Sumilao Farmers are without qualified CARP beneficiaries. They are actual residents of Brgy. San Vicente, Sumilao, Bukidnon where the disputed 144-hectare landholding is situated; the land is prime agricultural land; and they were occupying and personally tilling the land.

Also, the land was owned and in possession of their ancestors. Legally and logically, the land should be given to the Sumilao Farmers. But because of the capacity of few influential people, they were able to circumvent the law and became successful in grabbing the said land.

Even up to this date, the Sumilao Farmers are being deprived of the land that is from time immemorial, legally theirs.

The Fellowship of the 144-hectare land in Sumilao

The journey from Caldiga to San Jorge though long and tiring made the Sumilao Farmers inspired because of the support they received from different groups and individuals. To name a few, they were the DAR Leyte and Samar, Kabalikat Rescue Team of Catbalogan, Catbalogan Parish Church, St. Mary's College of Catbalogan, Catholic Women's League, Father Cesar Aculan of Calbayog, San Jorge Parish Priest Father Jonathan Zeta, layministers of Catbalogan and San Jorge's Parish churches and the sisters in St. Mary's College of Catbalogan.

Again, most probably this update to forgot to mention all those support groups and individuals who extended assistance to the Sumilao Farmers' struggle. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with BALAOD Mindanaw thru Ritz Lee Santos III at he_ritzlee@yahoo.com / balaodmindanaw@gmail.com.

Today and Tomorrow

Upon writing this update, the Sumilao Farmers are negotiating a 47-kilometer road from San Jorge to Calbayog. Tomorrow, they will head off to San Isidro. San Isidro would be their last municipality for the Visayas leg. They will ride a boat going to the Municipality of Matnog, Bicol Region. They will spend the night in Matnog as they get ready to start the Luzon leg.

Special Announcements:

Please catch the Sumilao Farmers at ABS-CBN's The Correspondents program tomorrow, 6 November 2007 right after Bandila, Channel 2.

Electric Avenue

Monday, November 05, 2007
by Eddy Grant

Now in the streets there is violence
an-na-na lots of work to be done.
No place to hang all our washing and then I can't blame it all
on the sun.
Oh no
we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue
And then we'll take it higher.
Oh
we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue
And then we'll take it higher.

Working so hard like a soldier
can't afford the things on T.V.
Deep in my heart I abhore you
can't get food for the kid.
Good God
we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue . ..
Oh no
oh no
oh no
oh no

Oh Lord
we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue . . .
Who is to blame in what country? Never can get to the one.
Dealing in multiplication and they still can't feed everyone.
Oh no
we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue
Out in the streets
out in the streets

Out in the playground in the dark side of town.
Oh
we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue . . .
Oh
we're gonna rock down to Electric Avenue . . .

May mga taong ipararamdam sa'yo na ang tanga-tanga mo at napaka-walang kwenta mo.

Ang mas masakit doon ay mahal mo ang taong iyon.

Lecheng life oh.
Magtatrabaho nalang ako nang tuluy-tuloy hanggang sa matapos na ang lahat ng trabahong pwedeng gawin.

If you can't love me, then just let me be.

143

It's 1:43AM, and I'm up. I couldn't sleep, tho I'm really tired. My head just keeps on thinking about a lot of things. It just keeps on tormenting me with a lot of anxieties and frustrations. I hate it. I wish I could just put it to stop just so I could be at peace even for a while.

When I close my eyes I would see images that I hate to see. Moments that I want to forget. Experiences that I wish never happened.

But then these all formed who I am. Even if they are painful, these made me. Even if I hate those moments, I am me now.

But then, I wish, even if just for a while, to forget them. I wish I could dream sweet. I wish I could see beyond.

I wish I could.

Can I just fly? And forget? And never come back?
