err.

Ayun. :P Thanks, Kuya James.

write

Saturday, February 02, 2008
I just want to write. Write. Write. Just blabbering. Unloading.

-

I am tired.

-

I'm torn between wanting to graduate already and not (yet).

-

It is extremely painful to not know what to do. I want to be there for you, but I don't know how. :(

-

I really hate the feeling of being left out. I looked so stupid. Why do you have to make me feel that way? Why? Why does it have to be this way everytime. Why you? Of all people. It's you who always does this to me. I was holding back my tears so no one would notice how bad I felt. I wish I could just be invisible.

-

How are you? I haven't heard from you for a while. I wish we could spend time together again. I'm scared for you, but I know you're strong.

-

I told myself I'd get over you, but still seeing your posts in Multiply makes my heart tinge even for just a bit. Not to be selfish, but right now I'm wishing that I didn't believe in that "forever" that you promised.

-

I wish more people would understand. I know it's abstract, but I wish more would care.

-

I don't want to expect.

Guinsaugon Drive

Last 15 January 2008, IMPUKAN launched a fund-raising drive for the Continuing Psycho-Social Care for the Guinsaugon Landslide Survivors project by SiLaBan (Sikolohiyang Lingkod Alay sa Bayan). The project is composed of two formation seminar-workshops aimed at both direct and indirect assistance for the survivors of the February 2006 landslide in Guinsaungon, St. Bernard, Southern Leyte. With a minimum target amount of P6, 040, IMPUKAN called for donations through continuous email blasts and word of mouth.

IMPUKAN is proud to announce that it was able to complete the drive on 28 January 2008. The amount collected from the drive will be used to purchase the materials needed for the seminar-workshops of the Guinsaugon landslide victims. IMPUKAN would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to the donors who contributed (either in cash or kind):

Dr. Nina Rojas (Chemistry Department, Loyola Schools, Ateneo de Manila University)= P1,000
Mr. Steve Koon = P700
Faith Therese Raagas (4 BS Management, Ateneo de Manila University) = P500
thru Globe G-Cash = P200
Cherryl Si (2 AB Development Studies, Ateneo de Manila University) = P100
Kristine Wee (3 AB Development Studies, Ateneo de Manila University = P100
Pathways to Higher Education-AUF Chapter = 150 crayons

The recently concluded Guinsaugon Drive is a statement that there are people out there who believe in the cause of working for an efficient disaster management system. Together with IMPok at Ugnayan para sa mga KAbabayang Nasalanta, let us continue to work towards being proactive against disasters: "Walang makapipigil sa dilubyo. Tumulong bago sumalanta ito."

hum

Friday, February 01, 2008
When I was in sophomore year I saw the magazine (err, magazine?) about the LS Awards in Fr. Bob's office. I read through it and felt really kilig after. I thought to myself that I wanted to have one in senior year. But then I was also humbled that that should not be my motivation for doing my service. Even without acknowledgment I should work hard. I should still strive to do more and to love more.

Ayun. I don't want to write details here, but a few people know where this entry is coming from. The reality still hasn't sunk in yet. I'm overwhelmed where this has brought me.

I am not expecting. Even if that "once upon a time dream" wouldn't be realized, the mere fact that I've experienced this is a huge thing already. There are people who actually believe.

Just continue doing good. Continue doing the most loving thing.

tanong

Ayun.

Sundays with my Ate

Sunday, January 20, 2008
I miss my sister. :(

When we were still together, Sunday was our special day. She didn't have work, and I didn't have school. She'd wake me up by lying down beside me and hugging me. I'd then pretend to be grumpy because she woke me up (sometimes I'm really grumpy haha. It's Sunday! I want to sleep!).

The afternoons would be spent by going to the mall or by just bumming at home watching TV (we didn't yet have cable so sometimes we'd rent VCDs at Video City) and eating a lot.

When I was already in high school I became very busy with schoolwork even during Sundays (kinarir ko ang high school!), but still we spent time with each other because she taught me how to do my Math. Once when I was sick she went home early from work and we watched our stock of VHS. She ordered pizza because I didn't want to eat (hindi uso ang pizza dati, pag may special occasion lang kumakain ng pizza). This brings me to remember that once when I was a kid, she bought me a pack of my favorite white chocolate when I got sick.

In short she always takes care of me.

It has been almost four years since we were together. I am not sure when we're going to meet in person again. The last time she called she just told me all about her Nintendo DS. She let me hear Mario talk when her console is booted. I am still my Ate's little sister. She still sends me boxes of Crayola and stickers and notebooks. She mails me news clippings about interesting articles like CC the cloned kitty, et al. She also gave me my first digital camera. But now we could also talk about CSR and resource mobilization. I could now tell her about my thesis and she would listen and tell me that there are similar projects in Canada. She gives me links to websites that I could refer to for ideas and tips. We don't talk about our Neopets much anymore as I've dropped mine already (ate, is yours still alive?).

Before she left the country last August 2002 she slipped a picture of the two of us in my Algebra book and at the back she said that one day we'd go on a tour and eat cheese. :) I am uncertain when that will be, but tour or no tour seeing her would be greater than the whole world.

I love you, my sister. :)

On 17 February 2006, a portion of Mt. Kan-abag caused a mudslide and covered Guinsaugon, St. Bernard, So. Leyte. At least 1,000 were killed. For those left behind, it has caused them to be deeply wounded by the painful experience…

Disaster management is not just about relief goods or building houses. Beyond the material needs, there is also a human side to it and it is addressed by psychosocial intervention.

Psychosocial intervention assists the survivors of disasters empowering them to rise up against the emotional losses and thus enabling them to see the meaning of life despite what they’ve experienced.

Impok at Ugnayan Para sa mga Kababayang Nasalanta (IMPUKAN) aims to enhance the existing collection system of the Disaster Management Unit of the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB). Recognizing that rapid response to disasters is crucial, the ultimate goal of the enterprise is to ensure that there will always be available funds for SLB to disburse even before a natural calamity is foreseen. The funds to be collected will be utilized for the psychosocial intervention that the Sikolohiyang Lingkod Alay sa Bayan (SiLaBan) offers to survivors of natural calamities. The innovation lies in the fact that collection is done beforehand so that SLB is prepared to respond immediately to disasters without waiting for donations to come.

Apologies to those who will receive this more than once.

RIP: Fr. EDUARDO P. HONTIVEROS, S.J. (20 Dece 1923 - 15 Jan 2008)

FR. EDUARDO P. HONTIVEROS, SJ
(20 Dec 1923 - 15 Jan 2008)

Fr. Eduardo P. Hontiveros, SJ, was born on 20 December 1923 in Molo, Iloilo City. He was one of eight children born to Jose Hontiveros and Vicenta Pardo.

Fr. Honti, as he is fondly known, was educated at the Capiz Elementary School and the pre-war Ateneo de Manila in Padre Faura, graduating from high school in 1939. From 1939 to 1945 he was at San Jose Seminary. He entered the Society of Jesus after the war in 1945, pronouncing first vows at Sacred Heart Novitiate in Novaliches in June 1947. There he finished his studies in philosophy and then proceeded to Ateneo de Zamboanga for his three-year regency, teaching religion, Latin, and English, and moderating the Choir String Band. In 1951, he traveled to the United States to study theology, and was ordained in 1954 by Francis Cardinal Spellman. After earning a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, he returned to teach in the Philippines in 1958. He pronounced final vows in the Society of Jesus in 1960.

Fr. Honti had a long career as a theology professor and seminary formator for Jesuits and San Jose seminarians. He served in various capacities, including as Rector of San Jose Seminary and Dean of Loyola School of Theology. For more than thirty years until 1991 when a stroke seriously hampered his mobility and capacity to communicate, he was a fatherly figure to generations of Jesuit and Josefino seminarians.

But Fr. Honti is best known for his music. In 1965, as the Second Vatican Council ended and called for inculturation of the liturgy, Fr. Honti, whose family is musically inclined, was already composing Mass hymns in Tagalog. He asked the church choirs in Barangka, Marikina, and Pansol, both communities near the new Ateneo campus in Loyola Heights, to sing his songs, and he readily adjusted the notes if the choir found his compositions too difficult. Before long, he had composed a complete set of hymns for the Mass. Thus began Fr. Honti's love affair with heartfelt liturgical music. His songs spread to other parishes and by the 1970s, aided by a fresh wave of nationalism, his songs had become staple fare at Masses.

His name may not be familiar to all, but his music certainly is. He was not the only Filipino who experimented with sacred music in the vernacular starting in the 1960s, but he was certainly the most prolific, and most successful, if success is measured by the popularity of one's work. Over a period of twenty-five years, Fr. Honti composed hundreds of hymns, many of which with moving stories of ordinary people behind them. He has inspired younger generations of composers like Fr. Nemesio Que, Fr. Fruto Ramirez, Fr. Manoling Francisco, Fr. Arnel Aquino, and Fr. Jboy Gonzales. It is no exaggeration that Fr. Honti has been called the Father of Filipino Liturgical Music.

Today it is a testament to Fr. Honti's pioneering spirit that so many styles of church music are sung in our Masses and other gatherings. The choices can seem quite daunting, and it is never easy to select songs that various generations of churchgoers can follow, but play the opening notes of Fr. Honti's Pananagutan, or intone his Luwalhati, Santo, Kordero ng Diyos, or his Magnificat, and everyone can join in. That is the surest way to show that while his name may not ring a bell, his music does.

Fr. Honti's initiatives have been recognized with the Ateneo de Manila University's Tanglaw ng Lahi Award (1976), the Asian Catholic Publishers' "Outstanding Catholic Author" (1992), and the Papal award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (2000), among many other awards and citations. He suffered another major stroke in early January, and went home to the Lord on 15 January.

His wake is being held at the Oratory of St. Ignatius, Loyola House of Studies, Ateneo de Manila University. Daily Mass starts on 15 January at 8:00 p.m. The funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, 19 January, 8:00 a.m. at the Church of the Gesu in Ateneo Loyola Heights campus. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Novaliches.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Loyola School of Theology, for the Eduardo P. Hontiveros, SJ, Professorial Chair.
